Presence, abundance and types of microplastics in the soil

SUMMARY:

In studies on microplastics, it is common to investigate them in aquatic environments, evaluating the resulting environmental impacts. However, despite advances on the subject, there is little information about this type of contamination in the soil environmental compartment due to the complexity and heterogeneity of the environmental matrix. Thus, the scope of this work was to carry out a study in three parks in the city of Santo André (SP) and compare them with the city's landfill, seeking to determine the presence, abundance, and types of plastics and microplastics in these terrestrial environments, exploring the correlation of the similarities and differences of the fragments found. Soil samples were collected on their surface and at a depth of 20 cm from each sampled site; the separation of plastic waste was carried out by dissolving the environmental organic matrix in an aqueous solution, through an oxidation process. Then, the macro and microplastic samples were submitted for identification by spectroscopy in the infrared region with Fourier transform (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The FTIR results revealed that the most abundant types of plastic found in the parks were polypropylene, poly (ethylene terephthalate), and polyethylene at the locations and under the selected depth profiles. By analyzing the abundance, it was possible to detect the presence of microplastics (MPs) in the proportion of 1.4 and 2.4 microplastic fragments for each kg of soil collected for the Celso Daniel Park and landfill, respectively. These results demonstrate that the landfill and the Park present high amounts of PMs in the soil, which is considered a severe environmental problem, with a high risk of toxicity to the health of living beings. In addition, it is generally observed that a greater number of microplastics was found when soil samples were taken at a depth of 20 cm. The results of this study also allow us to affirm that in the park, there is a greater abundance of PMs on the surface and at 20 cm depth from the ground due to the greater flow of visitors to the park. It was observed that in places with less assiduity of visitors, the vegetation is more preserved and, in the place with less cleaning frequency, it is observed, in a partial way, incorrect disposal of macro and microplastics, with greater intensity of degradation of these residues.
