Estimating damage caused by floods is essential to support decisions in large metropolises, providing the basis for cost-benefit analysis of intervention measures to control floods. This work aims to elaborate damage curves for the Córrego Ipiranga basin, a function that relates the damage caused by a flood with its submersion level. Hydrological modelling was carried out for rainfall of Return Time (TR) 10, 25 and 100, whose Curve Number, LagTime and K Muskingum were calibrated based on 11 observed events. This step generated calibrated design flows that were used in the hydraulic modelling to generate flood patches of TR 10, 25 and 100 for the study region, which were used by the delimitation, of the properties affected by the flood for different probabilities, and estimated the damage in the region based on existing equations in the literature. Subsequently, the damage value obtained was calibrated based on empirical data collected in the region on damage caused by a past flood of TR 20 (March 10, 2019) in the Córrego do Ipiranga basin. Rainfall calibrated in the hydrological modelling stage showed, on average, peak flows 16% higher than the values obtained before calibration. The loss obtained for the region only with the modelling for TR 25 was R$9,075,695.14. After parameterization with the observed data, the value of the financial damage was R$24,544,533.36, about 2.7 times larger than the model. The results highlight the importance of investing in flood prevention measures and demonstrate the importance of calibrating models with observed data, as the magnitude of the effects changes significantly.
