RESUMO:

Recently, the possibility of anaerobic oxidation of ammonia nitrogen directly to nitrogen gas, through the reduction of nitrite, was discovered. This process, known as anammox (from English, Anaerobic Ammonium Oxidation), has emerged as a promising alternative to conventional heterotrophic nitrification and denitrification processes, as it allows 60% savings in oxygen consumption (reduction of energy consumption), 100 % in exogenous electron donors (the process is completely autotrophic) and great reduction in excess sludge generation, resulting in up to 90% reduction in system maintenance costs. However, the implementation of this process is still limited, especially in the treatment of wastewater with low concentrations of ammonia nitrogen, below 100 mg N.L-1, such as sanitary sewage. This is because the anammox process depends on a preliminary biological step of nitritation (partial oxidation of ammonia nitrogen to nitrite), which is difficult to implement for poorly concentrated wastewater. Under normal operating conditions, biological systems generally promote complete oxidation of ammonia nitrogen to nitrate (complete nitrification), a compound that is not metabolized by anammox bacteria. Recent works have shown that the full establishment of nitritation is the main limiting agent for the application of the anammox process on a large scale in the treatment of poorly concentrated wastewater. In this context, with this research, it is intended to explore some operational strategies to obtain nitritation, aiming to create conditions for the establishment of anammox biomass. Thus, two continuous flow reactors, filled with different support materials, will be operated in parallel. The two reactors will be subjected to the same operating conditions. Different aeration times (aerated time and anoxic time) and different hydraulic detention times will be evaluated.
