Avoiding extinctions in threatened hotspots: the role of refuge landscapes

RESUMO:

The Atlantic Forest is one of the world’s most important biodiversity hotspot, with a high number of endemic species seriously threatened by habitat loss. Recent studies suggest the existence of a threshold, around 33% of forest cover, associated with the integrity of birds communities and with the presence of specialist species in the Atlantic Forest. Below this threshold, the number of forest dependent species decreases considerably. Despite the history of habitat loss, few extinctions have been confirmed in the biome. For this reason, this study assessed the habitat availability in the current potential distribution of forest dweller for 131 endemic bird species in the Atlantic Forest. To conduct the study, species potential distribution models and landscape analysis were made to evaluate the current habitat availability for Atlantic Forest endemic bird species for the years of 1987, 1997, 2007 and 2017. Furthermore, for each model an 800 meters radius was calculated around each pixel, always considering the 33% birds-threshold and, considering the historical series, it was possible to evaluate the evolution of these areas, named here as Refuge Landscapes. Also, the risk of extinction (IUCN) of these species was considered. The Atlantic Forest presents 28% of refuge landscapes and all species present at least part of their distributions covered by these areas, with no significant differences between the categories of risk of extinction, which may indicate that species classified as low risk have its risk underestimated, since part of its forest cover is below the threshold. When analyzing the forest values within the areas of potential distribution, it is clear that gross values of forest cover are overestimated, if we consider all forests as habitat, with the species that have the least forests within the refuge landscape being the most overestimated. The balance between deforestation and regeneration throughout the biome indicates a greater loss of forests within refuge landscapes and the exchange of old forests for new ones may pose a threat to species, besides the net loss of refuges themselves. The results indicate regions of refuge for endemic bird species in the Atlantic Forest and also underscore the importance of incorporating landscape characteristics into conservation measures, regardless of the degree of threat of the species, in order to reduce the impacts of habitat loss on the biodiversity of the biome.
