RESUMO:

A simple, fast and accurate method was developed for determination of Al, As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cs, Cu, Fe, I, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, Sn, U and Zn in urine by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). For the method development the following factors were considered: sample introduction system, sample diluent and dilution, ICP-MS variables, use of internal standard and calibration mode. Accuracy was checked by analyzing certified reference materials (CRMs). Samples were directly analyzed after 1:20 (v/v) dilution in 0.4% (v/v) HNO3 and 0.005% Triton X-100. Helium as a collision cell gas reduced polyatomic interferences and improved the recovery for Al, Mn, Cu, Cr, Zn, As, Se and Cs. The use of matrix matching calibration was beneficial for Al, Co, Pb and I, reducing interferences and improving recoveries. Except for Ba (78%) and Hg (52%), all the other elements were found to be within acceptable ranges (from 86 to 111%) of CRM NIST 2670a high level. Finally, the developed method was applied for biomonitoring of trace elements in 180 urine samples of occupationally exposed workers from a foundry industry. The potential toxicity of some elements and its effects in worker’s health make occupational exposure to metals a concern. In the present study, the exposed population presented mean levels of As, Cd, Pb, Cs and I statistically higher than the control population. Workers from this study presented higher urine concentrations of Cs, Ni, Mn, Pb, U and Zn when compared with other published data from occupationally exposed individuals. As speciation using a HPLC-ICP-MS method was performed since some samples exceed regulatory values for As concentration. Urine samples of exposed individuals showed increased levels of both organic and inorganic As species when compared to controls. Dimethyl As (DMA) and arsenite (As3+) were predominant As species in the urine of exposed workers. The safety conditions of workplace must be improved to reduce the chances of contamination and to ensure worker’s health.
