SUMMARY:

The substances classified as emerging pollutants are not commonly monitored and do not present established limits by regulatory agencies. The large-scale manufacturing and use of plastics are responsible by the emission of part of these pollutants. The dispose of polymers causes environmental contamination due to the breaking of their structures, yielding microplastics (MPs), and to the lixiviation of chemicals, such as bisphenol A (BPA). The monitoring and removal of the latter in natural waters is important because of its endocrine disrupting effect. As many packages may present BPA in their composition, there is also the need to evaluate the conditions for the migration of this compound to food. In the PhD project, analytical procedures will be developed for the determination of BPA in waters and foods aiming at the assessment of removal and migration processes. Modern extraction techniques will be exploited aiming at the enhancement of sensitivity of the spectrophotometric determinations. Sample preparation for the isolation of MPs in waters will also be evaluated for the identification of plastics exploiting the degradation products generated by advanced oxidative processes. The resulting molecules may generate an electropherogram with a unique profile that will allow the identification of the plastics (e.g., polyethylene and polystyrene). For these procedures, univariate or multivariate methods will be used for optimization aiming at best sensitivity, precision, and analytical frequency, as well as minimum consumption of reagents and waste generation. The accuracy of the developed procedures will be assessed with recovery and interferent studies, and comparative analyzes of samples using reference procedures. For the Exam, an article recently submitted for publication is presented. This work relates with the other proposals of the initial project because it involves the determination of a contaminant exploiting an advantageous modern strategy for sample preparation.
