Teacher and Student Learning Tracking through Learning Analytics Dashboards in the Moodle Virtual Environment

Learning is a product of interaction, which depending on the epistemology of its process, makes each learner interact with teachers, other students, and the content. In a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) it is possible to collect data on learner interactions, but the raw form of this data is challenging to interpret by those involved in the learning process. Learning Analytics Dashboards (LAD) applications have been developed to support learning analysis. However, there are few reports of the use of these tools in the virtual Moodle environment, widely used by educators. The problem that arises from this observation is whether this is due to the absence of these tools (plugins) for Moodle, their lack of knowledge, or functionality. A comparative study of LAD type plugins available for the Moodle environment was performed, highlighting its functionalities for the monitoring of the learning process by the teacher and the student. It was identified that the various plugins present complementary information and that their integrated operation could facilitate their use. Besides, most available LADs provide information for teachers only but not students. In this sense, this work aims to model and develop a Moodle plugin that has the following main features: (a) that makes automatic alerts for teachers and students by configuration, by both; (b) record to the teacher the student's actions before and after the alerts so that the effect of the alerts can be assessed; (c) that enables better monitoring of synchronous and asynchronous communication tools (query response time). It is intended to evaluate the plugin with teachers and students.
