SUMMARY:

Serious games are produced with the aim of providing skills development through interactive and non-linear media. To create these games, a multidisciplinary team is needed, with professionals from different areas, such as designers, programmers, artists and domain experts. An alternative to facilitate the development of new games is to provide domain experts interested in creating a serious game with tools that eliminate technical programming barriers for content insertion through Model-driven Game Development (MDGD). The MDGD defines that the game design is based on high abstraction models, which describe all the elements of the final game that is generated in an automated way. The Domain Specific Language (DSL) that accompanies the MDGD, through a metamodel, defines the capacity of the elements and relationships present in the game that will be created. However, there are difficulties in using MDGD in serious games because of the absence of approaches that integrate the MDGD with the requirements of serious games and the inconsistency of the domain expert participation during the production process of DSL and serious game. This master's dissertation aims to create a systematic process of the MDGD for the production of serious games, named as PREMISSA, and to evaluate it through the development of a DSL for serious games, involving the 2D quiz and adventure genres. As a proof of concept, PREMISSA was used to create a modeling language for quiz and adventure games  (named as LMJAQ). The results involved the production of artifacts of the DSL and the serious game created: documentation, code checkers, the LMJAQ DSL itself, and low and high fidelity prototypes of the serious game, the last one being produced in the Unity game engine. The main contributions are the PREMISSA process, the LMJAQ DSL, which included more than one gameplay genre, the executable game generated from the created models, and the proof of concept as an example of using PREMISSA. Future work involves the evaluation of PREMISSA by other serious game development teams, and the creation and validation of an editing tool that supports the use of PREMISSA by domain experts.
