Contributions to the Analysis of Student Learning Paths with the support of Educational Process Mining

SUMMARY:

Virtual Learning Environments (VLE) have been used to organize instructional materials and support communication between educators and learners in the learning process, especially in Distance Education (DE). In these environments, the teacher usually organizes the course's sequence of contents and activities according to his didactic-pedagogical strategies and expects that this organization guides each student in his learning path. However, students may follow different directions from those indicated in the organization of the material. VLEs typically record student interaction with course materials through an event log. Using these records to know the learning paths followed by students can help to better understand the learning outcomes and the relationships with the organization of course materials and the pedagogical strategies adopted by the teacher. Process Mining (MP) techniques have been applied to event logs to discover knowledge in these data from historical statistical information and process models representing the flow of actions performed. Applied to educational data, MP is called Educational Process Mining (MPE). There are some computational tools to support the application of MP, but their use requires technical knowledge that is not trivial. This scenario makes it difficult, for example, to expand the use of MPE by teachers. This work proposes a model for applying Mining Educational Processes that make it easier for the teacher to identify and analyze the students' learning paths. The MPE results are expected to help the teacher identify necessary adjustments to improve student learning outcomes. The work presents the model conceived, named PM4Edu, and a computational tool developed to support the model. The model was applied and evaluated by EaD teachers. In the evaluation design, teachers provided course logs, answered questionnaires and interpreted the results provided by the model in an interactive process with the researcher. The results indicate that the model offers relevant information to support teachers in possible interventions for redesigning courses.
