SUMMARY:

Musical timbre is one of the most complex sound attributes and its characterization is an open-ended issue. Given the discrete nature of the frequency spectrum of musical sounds, an approach is proposed to characterize the musical timbre in monophonic sounds of the traditional musical scale of western orchestral music, and in woodwind instruments, based on a set of dimensionless statistical descriptors, which relate the timbral characteristics of the fundamental frequency and the harmonic distribution in the FFTs. These descriptors occupy a 7-dimensional space in which, through Euclidean distances, we analyze the relationships of timbral similarity. Our goal is to find and analyze clusters of timbral similarities based on types of instruments, musical dynamics, pitch and data sets using the timbral distance approach through clustering algorithms. Furthermore, we want to know the descriptive capacity of our timbral descriptors through the classification algorithms.
