RESUMO:
The lack of student engagement is a present problem both in face-to-face education and in technology-mediated education. Researches show that the lack of engagement in online education is due to lack of planning, little thought-provoking instructional materials, and pedagogical approach, among others. There are several consequences of lack of engagement, such as school failure, dropout and low learning rates. Measuring student engagement is not a trivial task, and several surveys show the use of data collected by observers or reported by experiment participants. In fact, there seems to be a lack of research that reports the measurement of engagement levels in virtual learning environments automatically, that is, in a less intrusive way. In this sense, this work aims to design and evaluate a tool to measure students' engagement in Technology-Mediated Education. The idea is that the tool can record the full details of the student's interaction with the instructional materials based on metrics defined based on the literature. It hopes that the tool will provide teachers and students with elements to monitor engagement levels and help detect the reasons for disengagement.
