RESUMO:

The scientific community has increasingly paid attention to transparency in machine learning models for use in decision support applications. While many of the popular methods are considered a Black Box because they do not allow an inspection of their functioning, symbolic regression appears as a candidate in the direction of obtaining more transparent models, due to the potential it has to find simpler and more interpretable models. However, since interpretability is subjective, it is necessary to use additional methods to achieve a model that is intelligible to the user. While the Interaction-Transformation representation is a step towards simpler results, as it restricts the search space to simpler and more interpretable solutions, the result may not yet be intelligible depending on the problem domain. This project aims to develop and apply methods to interpret and explain the results of symbolic regression using the Interaction-Transformation representation, by automating the process of extracting information from a model, providing several perspectives to present to the user how it behaves. For this purpose, different approaches to extract information from symbolic expressions will be studied, such as the use of high-level descriptions, visualization tools, and quantitative measures of the expression's behavior, facilitating the model's reliability and plausibility to be established (or rejected).
