Monitoring of SARS-CoV-2 in children from a university community

PAGES: 80
BIG AREA: Ciências da Saúde
AREA: Saúde Coletiva
SUBÁREA: Saúde Pública
SUMMARY:

The control of the pandemic caused by the new betacoronavirus that causes Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV-2) is based on vaccination, associated with a decrease in the circulation of the virus due to social distancing and blocking transmission after diagnosis. The Federal University of ABC (UFABC), as well as several institutions in the State of São Paulo, interrupted their face-to-face activities as of March 2020 and to monitor the COVID-19 situation, created the Committee for Actions and Management of the Pandemic in the Scope from UFABC. With the start of vaccination of the adult population, UFABC began the gradual return of face-to-face activities in its community from March 2021. As part of the Committee's actions, our research group participated in the community's SARS-CoV-2 testing UFABC from May 2021 to December 2022, with the aim of helping to monitor the circulation of the virus on campuses, with isolation of positive individuals and reinforcement of non-pharmacological safety measures such as the use of a mask, in university spaces. Vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 in the adult population resulted in a decrease in the severity of infections and deaths, but did not prevent the circulation of the virus and the child population, not yet vaccinated, started to represent the population at risk, both for transmission of the virus , as for increased morbidity and risk of death from COVID-19. Vaccination of children against SARS-CoV-2 took place in three stages, firstly in those aged over 12 years from September 2021; of children aged 5 to 11 years in January 2022, and after December 2022 of children aged 6 months to 4 years. Testing in children is difficult due to the need to collect oropharyngeal and nasal secretions, which is invasive and requires a health professional to perform it correctly. Thus, in order to provide a molecular test for SARS-CoV-2, the gold standard, for children, the UFABC community was invited to participate in the weekly saliva collection of the children with whom the individuals live, using dry cotton, with kits similar to those used in community monitoring. Over 43 weeks, 1,234 tests were performed on children from the UFABC community. In this work, the results obtained with the standardization of the collection and diagnosis technique for SARS-CoV-2 in children will be presented; the epidemiological characteristics of the tested population and those who tested positive. The main genetic variants of SARS-CoV-2 will be presented divided by cities of residence of individuals who tested positive.
