RESUMO:

Investigations within the neuroeconomics research field aim to understand the cognitive and neurological mechanisms that generate the economic behavior of individuals. One of the relevant issues of this field is the intertemporal choice, i.e. decisions involving consequences that can vary over time. Generally, humans apply a variable devaluation rate: discount rates are higher for rewards expected in the near future than for rewards expected further in time. One source for this inconsistency is theorized to be the perception of time, i.e., the magnitude of the time intervals in the tasks is perceived non-linearly. It is suggested that time perception may follow an accelerated, a linear or a decelerated trend, depending on the individual. Yet, little is known about the relation of intertemporal choice with time perception and its neural correlates.

In this current research, we propose to (1) localize brain regions related to time perception, abstract numeric magnitude estimation and discount rate and (2) to establishthe level connectivity between them. Adolescents and adults will be the population target of this work. Methods include behavioral measurements, psychophysical functions derivation, NIRS for brain activity monitoring and brain connectivity analysis. For the next phase we propose a new experiment to examine the effect of neuromodulation of the identified brain regions on discount rate outcome and aims to describe causality between time perception and intertemporal choice.

The project aims to (1) review and a synthesize of the existing body of knowledge regarding intertemporal decision making and long term time perception, (2) improve the experimental protocols of time perception estimation, (3) investigate the connectivity between brain regions activated during time perception and intertemporal tasks, (4)and the new proposed experiment should investigate the hypothetical causal relations between time perception and intertemporal choice.
