TITLE:

Empathy and Valence Modulation in Intentional Binding: Socio-Affective Interactions in the Sense of Agency

PAGES: 40
BIG AREA: Outra
AREA: Multidisciplinar
SUMMARY:

This project aims to clarify the influence of emotional valence on the perception of agency, as evidenced through temporal binding - the subjective contraction of the interval between action and consequence - as well as its correlations with the individual trait of empathy and psychophysiological indicators of the impact of the valence of stimuli. Recent findings disagree as to whether positive consequences manifested after an individual action lead or not to a stronger temporal binding, when compared to negative consequences (Yoshie & Haggard, 2013, 2017). The discrepancies in the literature are possibly due to excessive subjectivity in the experimental tasks or to covariates omitted in the protocols, which disregard socio-affective aspects such as empathy.

In this project, we adapted the original experimental protocols by introducing a forced choice method between two intervals in a temporal discrimination task. We investigated, in separate experiments, the correlation of the magnitude of valence modulation with the individual trait of empathy, and with the variation in psychophysiological parameters in response to stimuli. If, using the new psychophysical method, the existence of modulation of temporal binding by consequence valence is confirmed, we expect to find evidence that volunteers with higher scores in empathic abilities experience the perception of agency to a greater degree in response to positive stimuli. At the intra-subject level, we expect a psychophysiological measure of the impact of valence to be correlated with modulation of the temporal binding in the predicted direction.

In this text, we present the results of an initial survey to verify arousal and valence scores of auditory stimuli used in the original study by Yoshie and Haggard (2013) – affectively charged vocalizations – in a group of volunteers who also responded to the Brazilian version of the Multidimensional Interpersonal Reactivity Index (EMRI; Davis, 1983). In addition to confirming the valence classification of the stimuli, the survey shows that there is a significant correlation between the volunteers' valence assessments and their empathy scores as measured by the MIRS. Preliminary results of an experiment carried out through an online platform that applies the proposed methodology for the verification of the occurrence of intentional binding and its modulation in observers who also respond to the EMRI are presented. The experiment on campus that relates affective modulation, if it occurs, with variations in affective state as measured by the psychophysiological record, more specifically by skin conductance and heart rate, is also detailed. Possible conclusions are discussed.
