TITLE:

INVESTIGATION OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN READING ACQUISITION AND WORKING MEMORY CAPACITY IN FIRST YEAR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

SUBÁREA: Psicologia Cognitiva
SUMMARY:

Working memory is the capacity for temporary storage and manipulation of information for complex tasks. During development, working memory levels increase while the child's literacy phase also increases. The objective of the work was to evaluate the relationship between reading acquisition, with a literacy intervention, and Working Memory capacity. 176 children of average age 6.59 (SD = 0.5; girls N = 95) from 5 public schools in Grande ABC were included in the final analysis. For the intervention, the game Kalulu was used and in the pre- and post-intervention assessments the following tests were used: Brown-Peterson, Digits, Pseudowords, Reading of Isolated Words and Recognition of Isolated Letters. The results were compared between experimental and control groups with repeated measures Analysis of Variance (ANOVAs). Subsequently, the data were standardized into Z Score and Factor Analyses were carried out, one Exploratory and two Confirmatory, also principal componentanalysis (PCAs), correlations with Sperman's Coefficient and Simple Linear Regressions. In the results of the ANOVAs at the beginning and end of the school year, the participating children demonstrated an improvement in performance, regardless of the group of origin. In Factor Analysis, PCAs and correlations, the data showed that there is a covariance between the factors of reading and working memory. The Linear Regressions indicated that the reading tests explain 25.1% in the initial assessment, and 33.2% in the final, of the results of the memory tests, showing that a better result in reading tests generates a better performance in the memory tests. memory, however, when inverting the directionality, the percentages are the same, exposing that it is difficult to separate between the two factors, which seem to amalgamate in development. It is concluded that it is viable to state that reading acquisition influences the working memory capacity of elementary school students, but working memory capacity also has an influence on reading acquisition.
