SUMMARY:

The performance in arithmetic is mediated by various cognitive functions, including linguistic abilities, number sense, and working memory. It is known that cognitive performance changes throughout development. However, there is still a certain variability in the results in studies that seek to understand the relationship between performance in working memory and number sense with arithmetic in children from different grades. Neuroimaging studies have shown that the activation and connectivity of intraparietal regions and frontoparietal networks are correlated with the processing of numerical tasks. It has also been reported that the activation of parietal areas in the absence of tasks requiring cognitive engagement (resting state) is related to mathematical performance. The relationship between the connectivity of spontaneous prefrontal cortex activity and arithmetic cognition is not yet well established. The present work is divided into two studies, each one with the aim of investigating one of the aforementioned gaps. In Study 1 participants were 131 students from the early years of elementary school. The evaluated cognitive functions included number sense, phonological and visuospatial working memory, and an arithmetic task. The results indicate that both arithmetic performance and number sense, as well as working memory, were lower in children with reading difficulties. An association that varies according to the school years was found between the assessed cognitive functions and arithmetic performance. In Study 2 participants were a subsample of 85 children who, in addition to the cognitive measures from the first study, had measurements of spontaneous prefrontal cortex activity collected using fnirs. As preliminary results, we found that the connectivity of the fnirs channels between dorsolateral and anterior prefrontal regions showed the strongest correlations with arithmetic performance; these connections also demonstrated correlations with working memory and number sense.
