WORKING MEMORY AND THE INFLUENCE OF A LITERACY INTERVENTION IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS

PAGES: 20

SUMMARY:

Working memory (WM) is a cognitive function that still awaits consensus among researchers. In Baddeley's model, WM consists of four components: phonological loop, visuospatial sketchpad, central executive and episodic buffer, arranged in two types of memory: visual and verbal. Cowan's model of "embedded processes" includes the activated part of long-term memory embedded in the memory system, and within activated memory, includes the attentional focus. In development, it is seen that as working memory levels rise, the child's literacy phase also advances, and it is to be expected that there is an effect of the literacy process on the progress of this cognitive domain. The aim of the present study was evaluating the influence of literacy on the development of working memory. A total of 176 children with a mean age 6.59 (SD = 0.5; N = 95 girls) from 5 public schools in the Great ABC region, São Paulo - Brazil were included in the final analysis. For pre- and post-intervention evaluations, the following tests were used: Brown-Peterson, Digits and Pseudowords. For the analysis Repeated Measures ANOVAs were used. The intervention was carried out in schools with a tablet game called Kalulu. Comparing test results at the beginning and end of school year, participating children showed improvement in their performance, regardless of the group they came from, whether it was the intervention group or the control group. However, when verifying the forward and backward Digits Span, the individual difference was greater and showed statistically significant differences between the experimental and control groups. Finally, a statistical improvement in the study is necessary, along with a refinement of selection of tests assessing working memory and verify the need to assess related skills, such as attention.
