SUMMARY:

Musical experiences can be relevant stimuli for child development, with implications in different domains such as cognition, motricity, and language. However, there are few structured protocols described in the scientific literature that can be replicated to more accurately assess the effects of musical experience on child development in early childhood. The musicality of speech, or prosody, is identified as a prerequisite for the development of communication and language. For many researchers, the perception of elements related to melody, rhythm, and timbre in speech is what facilitates the acquisition and development of language in babies. In this context, our main objective was to develop and systematize a protocol of musical experiences, based on prosodic elements, to stimulate communication and language and to evaluate its applicability in a group of babies aged 12 to 18 months. The secondary objective was to verify whether the applied protocol has significance for the child's development (cognitive, motor, language, adaptive behavior, and socio-emotional domains) assessed by the Bayley III Scale. The protocol was applied to 22 babies, who were evaluated with the Bayley III scale before and after the intervention. Fourteen 30-minute group sessions were held twice a week. Results: (1) The musical experiences protocol applied was well accepted, with positive responses to interventions and positive engagement of babies and their families; (2) In the adaptive behavior and socio-emotional questionnaires, answered by the parents, no significant results were found between pre and post-intervention. Regarding the evaluated domains, the results obtained showed significant improvement in all of them: cognitive, motor, and language.
