Contributions of regular yoga practice to neuropsychiatric aspects of aging
The Brazilian population aging calls attention to the need for health promotion projects at the primary care level, which improve the quality of life of this population. It is known that aging is a multifactorial process and its therapeutic approach must take into account the functionality of the elderly, considering it in its entirety. As an Indian philosophy-practice with an integral approach, yoga has been expanding in the field of primary care, especially for aging, as its benefits to physical and mental health are publicized. Among those benefits, there are the reduction of symptoms of anxiety and depression, greater tolerance to stress, better performance in cognitive functions such as memory and attention, improved sleep quality and flexibility. In a pandemic scenario caused by COVID-19, complementary medicine, such as yoga, can be a good option for promoting health and quality of life. Therefore, this research intends to evaluate, through a battery of tests and scales, the neuropsychiatric benefits acquired by the regular practice of yoga, such as reduction in the symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression in the elderly, reduction of pain, improvement in memory and attention, an increase in flexibility, resistance and agility and improvement in the quality of life and sleep. To achieve this goal, it is planned to recruit 60 people aged from 60 to 70 years, divided in two studies: one in a remote format (Study I), carried out by video calls, and another face-to-face (Study II) - 15 for the control group and 15 for experimental group, which will perform three weekly yoga practices, on alternate days, for 12 weeks. This research is in the experimental phase and a low adherence to regular practices can be investigated until then, which requires an intervention more often in order to increase the size of participation.
