TÍTULO:

EFFECT OF FREEZING OF GAIT AND ANTIPARKINSONIAN MEDICATION ON TRUNK AND UPPER LIMBS BIOMECHANICS DURING GAIT IN INDIVIDUALS WITH PARKINSON'S DISEASE

PÁGINAS: 25
GRANDE ÁREA: Outra
ÁREA: Multidisciplinar
RESUMO:

The use of antiparkinsonian medication represents a therapeutic advance for Parkinson's disease. However, gait is partially responsive to medication. One factor that alters these individuals' gait parameters is the freezing of gait (FoG). This study aims to analyze the effect of freezing of gait and antiparkinsonian medication on the trunk and upper limb biomechanics during gait in participants with Parkinson's disease. Twenty-two participants of both sexes diagnosed with idiopathic Parkinson's disease were evaluated. Participants performed the clinical and gait assessments in two different conditions regarding antiparkinsonian medication, on - when they are under the effect of antiparkinsonian drugs - and off, remaining approximately 12 hours before the evaluation without taking any medication related to Parkinson's. Participants were divided according to the presence of the freezing of gait. For the control group, 35 healthy age-matched participants were selected from an open database. All participants walked on the floor on a 10-meter-long walkway at a comfortable, self-selected speed. The kinematic variables of the trunk and upper limbs and the clinical characteristics of the groups in each condition were compared in the following analyses: Group PD FoG+ and PD FoG- both in the ON condition and control group; Group DP FoG+ and DP FoG- both in OFF condition and control group; Group (DP FoG+ and DP FoG-) and condition (ON and OFF). Linear mixed-effects models were fitted, controlling for differences between groups found in demographic characteristics and clinical scales for comparison between groups with PD. To compare the PD groups and the control group, analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used. The level of significance for all analyzes was set at α = 0.05; for the analysis of interactions, the Bonferroni post hoc was used.
