Implicit short-term memory and uncertainty in visuomotor integration and temporal information processing

RESUMO:

The context in which we perform an action influences how we perceive and act on a particular stimulus. One known effect of how context affects behavior is the serial dependence, in which behavior in previous trials affects performance in current trials. The underlying mechanism that makes this influence possible is not fully understood. Here we intend to explore the hypothesis that the serial dependence depends on an implicit short-term memory mechanism in a visuomotor integration and temporal information processing task. To this end, we will conduct a series of experiments with variations of the same interceptive task in which we aim to verify (1) the decay profile of the short-term memory associated to serial dependence in a remote experiment, (2) the nature of the information stored from the previous trial to the current trial and (3) what are the neural correlates, as measured through electroencephalography (EEG), of the implicitly stored information in short-term memory and how this information affects the neural signal for the current trial. Until now, we observed attractive serial dependence in the interceptive task in three experiments done remotely. With the first experiment, we better understood the decaying dynamic of the memory involved in serial dependence and ensured the possibility of remote data collection (1). We will perform future analysis adding to these data collected previously by our group. With the second experiment, we partially resolved the problematic in (2), verifying that the serial dependence still occurs when each of the stimuli characteristics are kept constant (distance, speed and time). We will perform additional analysis in this data and design another experiment to investigate the motor and sensorial aspects of the associated information. With the third experiment, we tested the behavioral effects on serial dependence of a unspecific stimulus that we will later use during the EEG signal acquisition (3).
