RESUMO:

Language is one of complex cognitive processes that make it possible for humans to name our individual experiences and to attribute meaning through the symbolic process, which consequently allow interpersonal communication. Phonological, morphological, syntactic and semantic processes ensure a balanced relationship between the form, content and the appropriate use of the language by given individual. Verbal fluency (VF) refers to the ability to produce fluent speech and is strongly associated with lexical ability, access, knowledge of words and auditory attention. VF tests evaluate a complex set of skills, functions and cognitive processes, and, because they are easy and quick to apply, VF tests have also been widely used in different age groups. There is a lack of studies with VF of children in the primary school and mostly the research is oriented on the clinical population. The objective of the present work is to evaluate VF, through the Semantic Verbal Fluency (FVS) and Phonemic Verbal Fluency (FVF) tests in students from the 2nd to the 5th year of elementary school and verify their correlation with cognitive skills such as language, attention and working memory. 68 children of both sexes, aged between 8 - 12 years old, enrolled from the 2nd to the 5th year of elementary level in a public school in Santo André, with typical development (TD) and learning difficulty (LD) in reading and writing skills, participated in this research. The parents / guardians signed the Informed Consent Form TECL and the Term of Assent previously approved by the Ethics Committee. In SVF task children were asked to name animals and PVF children had to name words that started with the letter P. Performance on each task was assessed by the mean score of correct answers. The performances were compared between grades and in relation to reading and writing skills in the typical development and learning difficult groups. A correlation between VF tests and other neuropsychological tests was analyzed by Jamovi considering p=<0.05. Results: The results was statistically significant for test effect for the correct items in both VF tests (p=<0.001). In the PVF test, a post-hoc analyses for escolar year effect it was significant statistical differences comparing the children  of 2nd  and 5th grade from DT groups (p=0.042) and children between 2nd LD and 5th DT group (p=0.014). In the SVF, there was no statistically significant difference between the groups. For correlation analyses (Spearman), the results was statistically significant for mean correlation between PVF and SVF (0.39); PVF and Raven (0.35); PVF and Phonological Awareness (0.48); PVF and Rapid Automatized Naming (-0.47). A high correlation was observed between PVF and Words Reading and Pseudowords reading (0.59; 0.53). Conclusion: This study presents the performance of children from the 2nd to the 5th year of public elementary school in the tests of SVF and PVF. In general, children performed better in SVF than PVF, but only PVF differentiated children in terms of development, indicating a difference in performance between younger and older children. In PVF, DT group showed a gradual improvement over the school years, while LD group showed an increase in score between 2nd and 3rd grade and an accentuated drop between 4th and 5th grade.
