RESUMO:

Human perception is often described as an inferential process driven by sensory andcognitive factors. Throughout this dissertation, I investigate how abstract constructs derived from music theory can influence the perception of low-level acoustic events. Specifically, I ask if scale steps, defined as the distance in number of scale degrees between any two notes of a musical scale, can be used to measure how individuals perceive pitch relationships. Our results suggest that quantifying acoustic stimuli in terms of abstract - musical - units might offera set of benefits to research on high-level auditory processing.
