SUMMARY:

This work is dedicated to the study of harmonic vector fields over a finite dimensional closed oriented Riemannian manifold, where we endow the tangent space with the Sasaki metric and see vector fields as applications between Riemannian manifolds. Of particular interest are the first and the second variations of the Dirichlet energy functional in the context of unitary vector fields. We then conduct a study about the infimum of the energy functional on odd-dimensional spheres, separated into dimensions greater than or equal to five and less than or equal to three. We finish this work by repeating and generalizing some of the calculations and results presented before, now endowing the tangent space with the generalized Cheeger-Gromoll metric.
