WHAT INFLUENCES YOUR CHOICE FOR THE LICENSE COURSE IN PHYSICS? A case study of students from the São Paulo institutions UFABC, IFSP and USP

Few students take the physics teacher course at the public university and effectively pursue a career as a physics teacher, while many others drop out of the course or the profession. As this has been happening, researches shows that people are concerned with understanding how personal life, school, the university of physics graduate corroborate the process of choosing for the students. Still, this research intends to collaborate for this, because it seeks to understand a set of cases - a multiple case study - from three institutions that are located in the greater São Paulo region: USP, IFSP and UFABC. These people are nine students, three from each institution, and were interviewed using the semi-structured interview method. Their speeches were analyzed by Content Analysis (BARDIN, 2001) and Comparative Analysis (GIBBS, 2011). The theoretical framework makes a bridge to the concepts of Pierre Bourdieu, which seeks an interpretation of the trajectory of each agent researched to relate it to their course choices. The report of their trajectories are coded into three umbrella categories – Family Heritage, School Heritage. For this analysis, respondents are reorganized into two groups, which use, as a criterion for grouping, whether or not parents have at least a higher education degree.Thus, it is possible to observe some particular differences for each group, such as having references for group 1 of family members who have a higher degree in relation to their parents. Also, similarities can be observed, such as the attribution of the teacher in his trajectory for both groups. In addition, from the respondents' answers about the choice of course, different relationships can be observed for each one of them, and, given these answers, it can be highlighted that the respondents from UFABC and USP report concerns about joining their respective institution, while for IFSP respondents, they are concerned about entering public higher education. In addition, each respondent showed particularities in relation to the reasons for choosing the course, such as the search for cultural capital, the desire to take and complete the course and the search for "something more", such as participation in the research. Thus, this investigation, which structures an analysis from multiple cases, shows evidence that the choice of course is part of the students' search for marked characteristics of cultural capital.
