SUMMARY:

Transient analysis programs usually have a simplified representation of protection relays, in addition, these programs usually only represent single-phase disturbances in the system. In this work, a co-simulation scheme is proposed, associating a transient stability analysis program with a short-circuit calculation program to improve the representation of protection relays in the transient stability analysis. With a co-simulation scheme, it will be possible during the simulation of electromechanical transients to check at each step, the state of protection for a given disturbance, using the results of the parallel simulation of the disturbance in the short-circuit program. The proposal is validated using commercial electromechanical stability software and a user-implemented short-circuit program. The advantage of this scheme is the use of protection settings made in short-circuit programs, which have detailed relay models provided by manufacturers, in stability analysis simulations. This scheme is applied to evaluate the performance of the distance protection in case of faults involving wind generation. Wind generators have a different response to faults than traditional synchronous generators and, due to this difference, several techniques have been proposed for distance protection of lines connected to wind power plants. For this, a power system with a high proportion of wind generation is modeled in CEPEL's ANATEM software and a short-circuit program is implemented in MATLAB for the co-simulation scheme. The method is validated by employing different protection techniques with the traditional method of transmission line distance protection.
