Artificial Intelligence in the 2020 Election Campaigns: Actor Networks and Implications for Democracy
This dissertation aims to map the use of artificial intelligence techniques in election campaigns for the Mayor of São Paulo in 2020, in order to analyze possible implications for democracy. It starts with the hypothesis that the use of machine learning and natural language processing techniques is being concentrated by large platforms, either by their proprietary algorithms, or by companies that develop products and services aimed at the digital environment. In order to map the use of artificial intelligence, electoral campaigns for the selected position, companies that provided services for the campaigns and members of the Electoral Court were interviewed. From the mapping undertaken, it is intended to analyze the direct or indirect participation of large platforms in election campaigns for Mayor of São Paulo in 2020, as well as possible implications for democracy.
