SUMMARY:

This work proposed to identify and assess the degree of risk, vulnerability and contamination of waterways, wells and aquifers located in the Upper Tietê Basin, which has the highest concentration of contaminated areas in Brazil. To this end, a methodology was developed to analyze the vulnerability of aquifers through the AVI method (Aquifer Vulnerability Index); delimitation of safety perimeters and identification of wells at risk, as well as the accumulation of contamination in the hydrography; and the elaboration of an Integrated Risk Index, unifying information on vulnerability, hazzard and exposure. Through the results it was possible to identify that the São Paulo Aquifer has a lower vulnerability index compared to the PreCambrian, mainly due to the thickness of its unsaturated layer. Using the parameters described by the current legislation, it was concluded that there were 7,958 wells at risk throughout the basin (77.15% of the total). It was also possible to notice that the rivers with the highest accumulation of contamination are the Tietê, Tamanduateí and Pinheiros, which are in areas with a high concentration of contaminated areas and receive the outflow from other water bodies that are also in risk of contamination. The most vulnerable municipalities, both socially and in relation to the aquifers, are located on the outskirts of the basin and need closer monitoring of the contaminated areas. The municipalities in the regions identified with the highest integrated risk index, such as Diadema, Guarulhos, Mauá, Osasco, Santo André, São Paulo and Taboão da Serra, coincided with those that also need to delimit safety perimeters in their wells, which is due to the large concentration of contaminated areas in the region. Thus, it was possible to identify the vulnerability, exposure, hazzard and risk indices for the Upper Tietê Basin, and it is hoped that with the results achieved, the research will serve as a basis to inform society and public agencies about the vulnerability and risks of the region, which can be prevented and mitigated with appropriate actions.
