SUMMARY:

Calcium and phosphorus, as essential elements, must be present in adequate amounts and proportions in the diet of companion animals (pets). On the other hand, contaminants such as formaldehyde may be present in leather-based pet toys, potentially affecting animal health due to prolonged exposure. Therefore, analytical methods for the quantification of nutrients and contaminants in pet products are of great importance. Conventional methods for calcium and phosphorus determination include atomic emission spectrometry, spectrophotometry, and redox titration. Some of these methods involve high operational costs due to the need for special gases and generate large volumes of waste because they are implemented in batch mode. Furthermore, low analytical throughput and limitations in precision and accuracy are frequently observed. Some of these drawbacks can be overcome through the use of flow analysis systems. In this work, an analytical method for the sequential determination of Ca and P will be developed based on a flow system with spectrophotometric detection. Phosphorus will be directly determined by the molybdenum blue method, whereas calcium will, for the first time, be indirectly quantified after its in-line precipitation as Ca₃(PO₄)₂. To minimize matrix effects and interferences, multicommutation-based calibration will be explored, analogous to multi-energy calibration. A spectrophotometric method for the determination of formaldehyde in leather-based pet toys will also be developed. A 3D-printed device will be constructed for the pioneering implementation of formaldehyde release studies in pet toys. The main chemical and physical parameters of the procedures will be optimized to achieve maximum sensitivity and analytical throughput, while minimizing reagent consumption and waste generation. The analytical characteristics of the proposed methods will be critically evaluated, and the procedures will be applied to samples of veterinary interest.
