Chemical characterization by molecular networking (GNPS) and evaluation of the antioxidant activity of hydroalcoholic extracts of ripe fruits of Solanum crinitum L. in non-cellular and cellular models[LA1]
Solanum crinitum L. is a Brazilian Solanaceae species whose fruits remain largely unexplored regarding their chemical composition and biological properties. Here, we report the characterization of the major metabolites and antioxidant activity of hydroalcoholic extracts from the peel, pulp, and seeds of ripe S. crinitum fruits. Steroidal glycoalkaloids, mainly solasonine isomers, and phenolamides derived from caffeic, ferulic, and p-coumaric acids were identified as the predominant metabolites. All extracts scavenged reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS and RNS, respectively), inhibited the oxidative burst of human neutrophils, and protected human erythrocytes against oxidative damage. The peel extract consistently exhibited the highest activity, which was associated with its higher content of catechol-containing phenolamides. These results indicate that ripe S. crinitum L. fruits are a promising source of bioactive compounds with antioxidant and cytoprotective properties.
