• General Information:

PROFMAT is a semi-distance course, nationally offered, carried out by a network of Higher Education Institutions, under the "Brazil Open University" context, and coordinated by the Brazilian Mathematical Society (SBM).

PROFMAT aims at assisting elementary and high school math teachers, especially in public schools, who seek to improve their professional skills, especially advanced learning of mathematical content, which is relevant for teaching practices. The program works in large scale, striving for, at medium term, having substantive impact on teachers' math skills nationwide. PROFMAT objectives are consistent with SBM's statutory mission of "stimulating the improvement of mathematics teaching at all levels" and also with the National Education Plan, which Goal 16 states: prepare and train, at graduate level, 50% of elementary and high school teachers up to the last valid year of this Plan, and ensure continuing education to all elementary and high school professionals in their areas, considering the needs, demands, and contextualization of the education systems.
